Purpose

Hand hygiene is the single most effective measure to prevent the transmission of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

When to Perform (WHO Five Moments)

  1. Before touching a patient
  2. Before a clean/aseptic procedure
  3. After body fluid exposure risk
  4. After touching a patient
  5. After touching patient surroundings

Method 1 — Alcohol-Based Hand Rub (ABHR)

Use when hands are not visibly soiled.

Duration: 20–30 seconds

Method 2 — Soap and Water

Use when hands are visibly soiled, after caring for C. diff patients, or after using the restroom.

Duration: At least 20 seconds

Key Points

  • Remove rings and watches before patient care
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in most clinical settings
  • ABHR is not effective against Clostridioides difficile or norovirus — use soap and water
