Purpose
Hand hygiene is the single most effective measure to prevent the transmission of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
When to Perform (WHO Five Moments)
- Before touching a patient
- Before a clean/aseptic procedure
- After body fluid exposure risk
- After touching a patient
- After touching patient surroundings
Method 1 — Alcohol-Based Hand Rub (ABHR)
Use when hands are not visibly soiled.
Duration: 20–30 seconds
Method 2 — Soap and Water
Use when hands are visibly soiled, after caring for C. diff patients, or after using the restroom.
Duration: At least 20 seconds
Key Points
- Remove rings and watches before patient care
- Artificial nails are prohibited in most clinical settings
- ABHR is not effective against Clostridioides difficile or norovirus — use soap and water
