Pouring a Sterile Solution

Category: Infection Control
Status: Stub — content coming soon

Purpose

Pouring technique must maintain sterility of both the solution and the receiving container on the sterile field.

Equipment

  • Sterile solution (e.g., normal saline, sterile water)
  • Sterile basin or cup already on the sterile field

Procedure

Key Principles

  • Check the label 3 times: when retrieving, before opening, and before pouring
  • Check expiration date
  • “Lip” the bottle: pour a small amount into a waste container first to remove any contaminants from the bottle lip
  • Hold the bottle outside the sterile field — never reach over it
  • Pour slowly to avoid splashing (splashing causes strike-through contamination)
  • Do not recap and reuse a partially used sterile solution bottle in the same procedure once the cap has been removed

Label Check

  • Correct solution
  • Correct concentration
  • Expiration date not passed
  • Appearance (clear, no particles)
