Pouring a Sterile Solution
Category: Infection Control
Status: Stub — content coming soon
Purpose
Pouring technique must maintain sterility of both the solution and the receiving container on the sterile field.
Equipment
- Sterile solution (e.g., normal saline, sterile water)
- Sterile basin or cup already on the sterile field
Procedure
Key Principles
- Check the label 3 times: when retrieving, before opening, and before pouring
- Check expiration date
- “Lip” the bottle: pour a small amount into a waste container first to remove any contaminants from the bottle lip
- Hold the bottle outside the sterile field — never reach over it
- Pour slowly to avoid splashing (splashing causes strike-through contamination)
- Do not recap and reuse a partially used sterile solution bottle in the same procedure once the cap has been removed
Label Check
- Correct solution
- Correct concentration
- Expiration date not passed
- Appearance (clear, no particles)
