Purpose

Common Prepackaged Kits
- Indwelling urinary catheter (Foley) insertion kit
- Straight catheter kit
- Central line dressing change kit
- Wound irrigation kit
- Lumbar puncture kit
- Thoracentesis kit
Procedure
Key Principles
- Inspect the package for integrity before opening (tears, moisture, expiration date)
- Open outer packaging using clean technique; inner contents remain sterile
- The inner wrapper becomes the sterile field — open corners away from body
- Identify all kit contents before beginning the procedure
- If any item appears non-sterile or packaging is compromised — do not use
Before Opening: Safety Checks
- Correct kit for the procedure
- Expiration date not passed
- Package integrity intact (no tears, no moisture)
- Lot number documented if required
